Wanted to share a clarification. California actually does not have a statewide e-filing system in place. They're working on it and they have been for a while. A state as large and diverse as California faces many challenges - not the least of which is finding the $$ to integrate more than 58 jurisdictions in the world’s eighth largest economy.

Fortunately, there are electronic filing and electronic service providers, like LexisNexis File & Serve, with solutions that are already in place to bridge such a challenging gap. In some instances it’s a direct e-filing solution, providing all of the functions and features you describe integrated with a court’s case management system; in others it's an e-service solution providing a secure and verifiable electronic exchange of documents between the parties in a particular case, while still providing such feature-rich functions as auto-PDF conversion, fully searchable dockets, and real-time reports.

As firms begin to embrace e-filing as a time, resource and money-saving solution to the high cost of traditional print and serve, they're frequently frustrated by jurisdictions that can't provide an electronic solution. So, more and more firms are engaging these third party providers to help them bridge the gap.

The good news is that as more firms get online and use e-service when e-filing isn’t available, those firms will be ready when e-filing eventually does come to their jurisdictions.
