CourtReference.com is designed to help with a search for court records in several ways.

1. Court Summary: Use this summary chart to get an overview of the types of courts in a state, and the types of cases generally heard by each court. This can be helpful if you do not know what type of court to contact, or if you are looking for a particular type of court record.

2. Court Types: Use the additional detail provided to narrow your search if necessary. These pages can be especially useful for states with complex trial court systems, such as Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

3. Court Directory: Once you understand which type or types of court have the records you are looking for, you can search the Court Directory search box at the top of every state page for court contact information by county, town and zip code. Official court records are only available from the court, so a complete search for court records involves contacting the court.

Many states offer online access to some level of court records and court case information. Online court records can be helpful in locating the proper court to make a request for official records, and can provide additional details about a case that can help a court clerk quickly locate a requested record.

4. Courts Online: Every state has a Courts Online page with links that have been found for online court record search services offered by state judiciary websites for trial courts throughout the entire state, including court dockets and court calendar information. Some states, such as Virginia, offer court record search services for many counties through a statewide court website for the Virginia Judicial System. In other states, such as Ohio and Georgia, online court record search services are offered by individual court websites and can be found by using the Court Directory to search local resources by county, town or zip code. Some states, such as Florida, offer both a statewide court record search for most counties and court record search services through individual court websites. Use the Courts Online page to find statewide court record search services, and the Court Directory search box to find links to online resources from individual courts or counties.

CourtReference.com offers a wide variety of online court resources for every state, and this is a general overview of the types of links that have been collected so far. In the Courts Online section for each state, there are links from statewide court systems, statewide trial courts, court-related government agencies, bar associations and non-profit legal services organizations. Online court resources are different for every state, so not every type of link is available for each state and county. We continue to add new links regularly and welcome suggestions for additional links to include.

ONLINE COURT RECORDS

Many states offer some level of access to court records or court case information online. Some states provide online court record search services for most or all of the state, and in some states, individual court websites offer online information about court cases. Online court records and case information can include court dockets, court calendars, published opinions and published orders.

Generally, some information about many types of cases can be found online. However, online court records are not official court records, and can only provide general information. For official court records or court case information, the court that keeps the records must be contacted. By using the Court Directory search box, court contact information can be found by county, town and zip code. Links for many individual court websites are also listed, with local county or court online resources highlighted with the contact information for each court.

It can be helpful to find online information about court cases before contacting a court clerk to request information and records. By finding information online, including docket numbers, case numbers, party names and dates, the clerk can be asked specific questions, which can save time and make the search for records more effective.

To help determine which court may have a particular type of court record, the Court Summary pages for every state offer a summary chart of cases heard by each type of court. The Court Types pages offer more specific information about the types of cases heard by each court.

Another online resource offered in most states is online access to public attorney discipline records. Currently, the only states without online search services listed are Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Utah. However, links to contact information for attorney disciplinary authorities and information about how to file a complaint about a lawyer are listed for every state. Online forms to make a complaint about an attorney are available online in many states.

More information about court records in general can be found in the article "What Everyone Should Know About Court Records."

This section also lists links to court-related government agencies, such as child support services, child protection agencies and departments of motor vehicles. For many types of cases, government agencies offer online services and information, and some agencies are involved in court cases when the State or one of its agencies is a party in a case. Additional links to government agencies, such as corrections, law enforcement and public safety, can be found at the Free Public Records Directory

LEGAL AID, FREE SERVICES, LAWYER REFERRAL SERVICES

Links in this section include organizations offering free legal services to eligible clients, including non-profit organizations, bar associations and public defenders. Links to lawyer referral services and online lawyer directories are also listed.

Links to court services are also listed in this section, including directories of interpreters, mediators and other court-related services.
