The Vermont trial court system consists of Superior Courts, District Courts, Family Courts, Probate Courts, The Environmental Court, and The Judicial Bureau.
 
Superior Courts have general jurisdiction over most civil and criminal cases, but typically handle cases beyond the jurisdiction of other courts. District Courts, Family Courts and Probate Courts have limited jurisdiction over certain types of cases and may share jurisdiction over some cases with other courts. The Environmental Court is a specialized court that handles certain types of cases for the entire state from one location. The Judicial Bureau has statewide jurisdiction over most traffic and municipal ordinance violations and operates out of one location in White River Junction.
